![]() Squinting – due to discomfort, but severe inflammation can also cause scarring and fusion of the eyelids to the eye, especially in kittensĮye infections are often treated with eye drops or ointment and usually respond well to treatment.Ocular discharge (discharge from the eyes) ranging in colour from clear to green-yellow, which may dry to form a crust.Other viral infections, such as feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukaemia virus, and feline infectious peritonitis, can lead to uveitis (inflammation of the uvea, the middle area of the eye including the iris), which can also result in blindness. Feline chlamydophilosisis a bacterial cause of conjunctivitis. Damage to the cornea as a result of keratitis can lead to blindness. Likewise, feline herpesvirus is also a highly contagious virus that can lead to conjunctivitis, as well as (less commonly), keratitis, which is the inflammation of the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye). Feline calicivirus is a highly contagious virus that is a cause of ‘cat flu’, and can lead to conjunctivitis in cats. Viral or bacterial diseases can also lead to eye infections. Newborn kittens may develop eye infections due to vaginal infections of the mother at the time of birth, as well as being born into an unsanitary environment. Left untreated, conjunctivitis can lead to eye damage, vision loss and blindness.Įye infections can be caused by injuries to the eye, or foreign objects in the eye (eg, dirt, sand). This is where the infection leads to inflammation of the conjunctiva – the pink membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and the outer surface of the eyeball (see picture). As well as the risk of blindness, eye infections cause extreme discomfort and pain. I guess I got a thing for black cats & they have a thing for me.Eye infections are a treatable condition in cats however, severe eye infections and eye infections which are left untreated can cause permanent blindness in cats. I took them home hoping to find a good home for atleast one of them, but nobody wanted a black cat or two. In June I found these 2 little guys by the side of the road one night while I was working. He infiltraded our family & within 3 weeks it was like he had been with us 3 years. He was with us for 4 yrs & passed this past Feb. Then we got this house & another black cat shows up, Petrolio is what we named him. Named him "Black Brotha", but he wasn't really ours, he'd come & go as he pleased. One big black cat showed up at my mother house when we moved in with her inbetween houses. I've had dogs my whole life, never really liked cats until a few years back. Yeah I'll make a new thread with some pics of the guys.įunny, I never thought I'd be posting on a cat forum, being that I am what many would consider a "dog person" lol. I did a dry run one Sunday afternoon and was very happy I did - nothing more fun that driving with a sick cat late at night when you're not quite sure where you're going (yes, I'm the last person in the US without a smart phone). And, just a suggestion - if you don't already know where your ER vet is, maybe find out which one your vet's practice uses and how exactly to get there. If your boy isn't 98% normal tomorrow morning, I'd give the vet a call just to make sure. The vet was very kind, came to the phone, and told me what signs to watch for and more or less when to panic. In my limited experience, I've found that both vets and ER vets are more than good with phone calls (yep, called my vet ten minutes after I got my boy home from his first dental - they had told me he'd be groggy, but I didn't realize he'd be walking like a drunken sailor). ![]() Yay that he's better.but I know how scary it can be not knowing if something is 'unusual but not worrisome' or 'gosh, honey, warm up the car we're on the way to the ER vet'.
